Garden Update 200625 from Marilyn

"Eyes that look at the world through a lens of wonder find those things that are Wonder-ful" (Pinterest)

How wonder-ful is our very own Community Garden! Full of life... not just the butterflies, bees and not just the seeds we have sown and watered, nor the seedlings we nurture but also the beautiful bulbs which work so hard "underground" pushing their way to the surface in bursts of colour to announce the change of seasons!

Wonder also lies beneath the soil where it  all begins, encouraging worms and thousands of other little creatures each with its own unique and vital role to play in creating a healthy environment in which to grow our veggies, herbs and flowers!

We'll be exploring this over the next few weeks and months as we now have a Compost Tumbler ready to go...

Today we started to layer shredded paper/ cardboard as well as some chook manure from Lucy and Jack's own chooks! Added too was some garden waste and some apple cores which the students will be encouraged to place in the tumbler instead of rubbish bins. Some students had fun today with the tumbling part of the process!

If anyone can contribute coffee grounds or other suitable material that would be much appreciated... There are guidelines on our Tumbler as well as compost caddies as to what is/isn't suitable. Together we can minimise food waste and maximise recycling opportunities ie paper/ cardboard etc

Thank you to Samantha Ondrus-Jansen (Frankston City

Council Circularity Program) and to David Gravina (Compost Revolution) for helping to get us started!

KPS was featured in the local publication "Frankston City News" as "School Ambassadors Helping Green our City"! (See photo)

Preparations have begun on some garden beds ie basic weeding for our Tree Planting Day on July 25th, this being a Planet Ark and Frankston City Council initiative.

If you didn't catch the last newsletter, we will be receiving 300 Indigenous plants!

We are proud and grateful for being named Environmental Ambassadors but we need help! Please contact the office or just visit us in the garden on Wednesdays around 10am (includes morning tea!).

Science Afternoon/Evening...Wednesday 23rd July

SCIENCE FAIR: 4.30-5.30pm
Karingal Primary School will be holding our FIRST Science Fair. The Science Fair will be an opportunity for students to create an independent science project and present this.

When choosing a research topic, think first about what sparks your child's curiosity. They need to answer questions on their topic that help them understand the world around them, or, how things work; it may be to learn about a new scientific interest or to solve a problem.

Students are to create their project in their own time.

If your child does not want to create a project, they are more than welcome to attend the fair and look at other projects.

CHEMISTRY CARNIVAL: 6.00-7.15pm

This chemistry-based topic features the best of chemistry activities, investigating states of matter, mixing and un-mixing, and the properties of materials.

Chemistry Carnival is organised and hosted by PrimeSCI! (Swinburne University of Technology).

Running for 75 minutes, the sessions are delivered by dynamic presenters and are packed with hands-on activity stations. Expect all sorts of icky gloop, dry ice, and heart-pounding explosions to make this an unforgettable evening.

Food and drinks will be availabe on the night to purchase.
