You are required to send a note of explanation or ring the School Absence Line on 9776 7336.
If your child will be absent for an extended period of time, please let the teacher know, so that work may be provided.

Assembly

School assembly is usually held on Monday morning at 9.00am.

Attendance Register

Located at the main office window is an attendance register which assists in the identification of visitors to our school. Between the hours of 9.00am and 3.30pm, if you are attending the school for any reason, please report to the office first and sign the attendance register stating the purpose of your visit and time in. On completion of your activity or collection of children throughout the day, please sign out on departure. By assisting in this manner, we can monitor the movement of people in and out of the school.

Before School Care

Enquiries can be made to: Frankston Council on 9784 1888

Bikes

If children ride a bicycle to school, particular care must be taken and a helmet is compulsory. The Road Traffic Authority recommends that children below Grade 4 should not ride bikes to school without being accompanied by an adult. Riding in traffic etc requires well-developed peripheral vision and other skills generally not fully developed in children until about Grade 4.

Book Club

The school acts as an agent for Scholastic Book Club, which offers a range of items at a reasonable price. Information is sent home and orders with money must be returned by the closing date.

Camps Program

Children in Grades 5/6 will attend camp at Phillip Island Adventure Camp in Cowes on Phillip Island from 19th to 21st November 2007.

Children in Grades 3/4 will attend camp at Coastal Forest Lodge in Angelsea from 7th to 9th November 2007.

Casual Relief Teachers (CRT)

If a teaching staff member is absent, we employ a CRT usually through an agency. All CRT’s are qualified teachers who take over class activities. This form of employment is also used to fill some longer-term vacancies.

Class Allocations

At the end of the year, staff are involved with a process to establish new class groups for the following year. The aim is to establish balanced academic and social groups. A lot of time, effort and grouping review is expended.

Complaints Procedures

We aim to solve any problems, speedily and amicably. If a concern relates to a classroom issue, the best procedure is to contact the class teacher and organise a meeting at an agreed time. Year level co-ordinators may also be of assistance.

If an issue is of a greater concern, please do not hesitate to contact Chris Gay or Karen Luff.

Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

A parent or guardian of a primary or secondary student, up to the age of 16, who holds a current pension concession, health care, benefit, Veterans Affairs (TPI pension card), or a Foster Parent card on the FIRST day of Term 1 and /or Term 3 in the school year is eligible for payment of the EMA. Application forms are available from the office.

Excursions/Incursions

First hand experiences are part of a vital education program. To participate in these group outings is a valuable aspect of a child’s development. When organising an excursion we will seek your written consent, money to cover costs and sometimes your assistance with supervision.

N.B. Toddlers and babies in pushers cannot be accommodated.

Fundraisers

Children are encouraged to contribute to special purpose fundraisers when held. We encourage children to be aware of the needs of others.

Web Page

Karingal Primary School’s web page is www.karingalps.vic.edu.au. This page has information regarding our school environment and term calendar. KPS also has an intranet for use within the school.

Immunisation Records

On enrolment, the school must have a copy of the child’s birth certificate and immunisation record. The City of Frankston can assist with the appropriate immunisation documentation or you can get a copy of your child’s immunisation history statement at www.medicareaustralia.gov.au: or at your Medicare office; or by calling 1800 653 809.

Your child will be excluded from school if there is an outbreak of an infectious disease and we do not have a current immunisation record.

Leaving During School Hours

If you wish your child to leave school early (appointments etc) it will be necessary for you to inform the class teacher in writing, collect the child from the classroom and sign out in the Late Pass/Early Leave book at the office window. In the interest of your child’s safety, we will not send a child home at any time other than dismissal time.

Lost Property

Clothing, bags, lunch boxes, etc. need to be clearly labelled with your child’s name. A permanent marker is quite effective on the tags of most clothing and hats.
Lost property is stored in a basket opposite the computer lab. You can check there for longer term lost items. Please encourage your child(ren) to pick up their belongings after recess and lunch.

Lunch

Children are supervised while they eat their lunch indoors.
It is also recommended that children have play-lunch at morning recess. It is easier for children if play-lunch is wrapped separately from lunch and they know which is which.

Please note: Chewing gum or Bubble gum is not permitted at school.

Drinks in bottles or cans constitute a danger – please do not give your child these. Drinks in plastic containers are fine.

Lunches from home

When the weather is warm, parents are encouraged to:

·        Put a frozen container, such as a drink, in the lunchbox with food that is normally refrigerated (like ham, yoghurt, etc). For extra safety, use an insulated lunchbox or cooler with frozen containers. These together keep food cooler and safer on hotter days.

·        Avoid perishable foods which have just been cooked or warmed, such as hamburgers or boiled eggs. These foods need to be cooled before being packed for lunches.

·        Discard any leftovers that come home.
