Introduction

Karingal Primary School, with a population of 275 children, is situated in a well-established residential bayside suburb of Frankston, approximately 50 km south east of Melbourne. The school was established in 1966 and provides a dynamic academic and social environment for all students, their families and the surrounding community. KPS is in an area that is focused on the care of children. The school’s attractive site, with well established native trees and abundant fauna contrasts beautifully with the local urban environment and a comprehensive shopping complex and a mini complex nearby.

The Learning and Teaching Program

In 2007, there are 16.5 full time teaching staff including the Principal, Assistant Principal and two Leading Teachers.  The 7 non-teaching staff include an effective full-time allocation of 1.6 administrative office staff and 3.64 integration aides.

Karingal Primary School has 12 grades mostly organised as composites in line with the Victorian Essential Learning Standards. This has been abbreviated to VELS and it includes the curriculum to be taught and integrates personal development and thinking into the student’s learning.

Future Directions

In 2005 the school received funding from the Education Department to build a Hub attached to the school. The Hub, Karingal Family and Children’s Hub, is jointly funded by Frankston Council, Department of Human Services, Department of Education and Training, and is to cater for families and the early years needs of the Karingal Community.  This project is still in the town planning phase but we are expecting building to start in 2007. The school will have three prep rooms, a gymnasium and two offices and will be built adjacent to the school on Wingham Park. In 2007 we started a Montessori stream to cater for the needs of the local Montessori preschools on the Peninsula.
